Expedition Science: Yellowstone!

**This detailed itinerary is subject to change. All changes will be announced in class and will be posted at School.BealsScience.com/Yellowstone

General Information

This field excursion to Yellowstone National Park (YNP) is meant to expose students to the geological, biological and ecological wonders that exist in our region. We will explore geysers, hot pots, waterfalls, wildlife biology, wolf ecology, and Native American history/traditions. This opportunity has been Target Field Trip grant from Target Stores.

Depending on road closures and other issues, all information in this itinerary is subject to change. Visit the link above to stay informed.

We will be spending a lot of time traveling so we can see as much of the park as possible. However, we will be spending several hours outside of the bus, walking and exploring; expect below-freezing temps and snow follow the packing guidelines below very carefully.

What to Bring

1 backpack (space is VERY limited)

      • binoculars
      • sack breakfast
      • camera
      • money for lunch @ Old Faithful Cafeteria - or - sack lunch

      • *Winter hat
      • *Gloves
      • *Winter coat
      • *Boots
      • *Warm socks
      • Winter pants
      • Additional winter gear/clothing

Food

No food will be provided. Students need to bring a sack breakfast. We will stop for lunch at the cafeteria at the Old Faithful Visitors Center, students need to bring money or a sack lunch. Dinner would be determined by our location during that time of the evening but it is likely that there will be nowhere to stop for dinner, so, each student should bring a something to snack/eat for the ride back to Billings.

      • Due to changing road conditions within the Park, I am unable to give a precise arrival time. Students can call home with more detailed information.

Expectations

While this is not a required activity for students, it is a school-related activity. All of the rules that apply in school apply during this activity. Students will not be allowed to skip out on certain activities to stay in the van; they must be willing to participate in everything we do (hence the need for a lot of warm clothing). I plan to be very flexible in our travels. If an opportunity arises to experience something unique and special, we may stray from the scheduled itinerary.

Securing a Spot:

We have 22 student seats available. Students need to bring the “School Related Off Campus Activity” form, filled out and signed by a parent. Seats will be filled on a first-come first-served basis.
